On Sunday night, there was a rather impromptu blind tasting organized up at Freedom Run Winery. Eight of us came and tasted through ten wines. I hadn't tasted blind in yearrrrrrrrs, so I was worried about mis-guessing everything, but I was surprised to learn I got half of them right! Of course, I couldn't guess varietal, location, and vintage for all - I simply have been out of the loop too long - but just being about to guess the varietal was more than good enough for me.
I'd forgotten how fun tastings can be! Avid wine folk tend to have wicked imaginations, so the conversation, of course, quickly spiraled into playing strip blind tasting, mocking dornfelder, and hailing Kenny Rogers.
I only took one photo because I was actually concentrating on the tasting (and didn't want to be an annoying paparazza). The winner of the night was Ch. L'Ancien, 2000, Pomerol, for which I'd noted the very highbrow descriptor of "YUM." My least favorite was Channing Daughters Due Uve. A pleasent surprise was Marcari's Bergen Road, which I really liked and was quite happy that it was a Long Islander.
This, of course, is all making me want to reconnect with the wine world. But, how? Bryan said something about needing help in the tasting room. That would RAWK, but it's just not possible right now. Grrr.
